DB upholds life-imprisonment of husband, mother-in-law

JAMMU, Jan 9: In a criminal appeal, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Janak Raj Kotwal and Justice B S Walia today upheld the life-imprisonment of Girdhari Lal (husband) and Janki Devi (mother-in-law) of deceased Nirmal Devi, who was killed by the convicts for not giving birth of any child.
After hearing both the sides, DB observed, “prosecution has proved facts, which are sufficient to draw inference that appellants had been nourishing intention to do away with the life of the deceased to pave way for second marriage of Girdhari Lal for the reason that deceased had not given birth to any child”.
“Prosecution has also succeeded in proving that the appellants committed murder of the deceased inside their house by strangulating her and in order to cause disappearance of evidence of murder and camouflage it as a case of suicide set her dead body ablaze”, the DB observed while upholding the life-imprisonment.
