SRINAGAR : Heavy vehicles will continue to ply from one side only while light vehicle traffic was resumed from both sides on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.
Light vehicle traffic was resumed from both sides today, a traffic police official said this morning.
He said following improvement in the weather and road condition, light vehicle traffic was resumed from Srinagar and Jammu today after only one-way traffic was allowed yesterday.
However, only one-way heavy vehicle traffic will continue till further orders to avoid any accident and traffic jam on the highway. ”Today heavy vehicles, including those carrying fruits and empty oil tankers, left different parts of the Kashmir valley for Jammu this morning, he said.
However, no heavy vehicle will be allowed from Jammu to Srinagar today, he said. He said decision to continue one-way heavy traffic on the highway was taken as the road had been damaged at several places where only one vehicle can pass at a time and the road has also becomes slippery due to below freezing temperature in the morning and evening.
Two-way heavy vehicle traffic on the highway will be allowed only after the weather improves. There is no threat of landslides and damaged portion of the road is repaired.
Traffic on the highway remained suspended for about three days due to heavy snowfall and landslides last week. However, after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the snow and landslides traffic was resumed.
There is a forecast of more snowfall from Friday in the region. Meanwhile, the historic Mughal Road, linking Shopian in South Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed due to five to six feet of snow.
The road, which was seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway, will reopen only in summer, officials said. (agencies)
