JAMMU, Jan 16: Sahitya Akademi New Delhi in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages today organized a programme “Meet the Author” here at Abhinav Theatre.
During the programme, Prof Champa Sharma, former HOD Dogri Department, University of Jammu and eminent Dogri writer, scholar, poet and intellectual, interacted with the audience which included her contemporaries, prominent writers, citizens, students and scholars.
Born on June 9, 1941 at Daghore in Samba, Prof Champa Sharma got her early education in Samba and thereafter qualified MA Sanskrit and PhD. In 1977, she passed here honours in Dogri (Sheromani). She started her journey as a writer in 1958.
Dr Lalit Magotra, Convener, Dogri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi while delivering his welcome address and introductory remarks about Prof Champa Sharma, highlighted the importance of the Sahitya Akademi’s prestigious programme “Meet the Author”.
While introducing Prof Champa Sharma, he said that Prof Champa has contributed in a significant manner to the promotion and development of Dogri language and literature for more than last fifty years. He further said that her role in the establishment of PG Department of Dogri is remarkable and she was the first HOD of that Department.
“In her personal capacity, she has immensely contributed to Dogri literature by penning down 18 original books, 7 translations and 9 compiled and edited books”, he added. He further told that for her contributions, she has been awarded by various State and National organizations like Sahitya Akademi, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and Dogri Sanstha.
Prof Champa Sharma also shared her experiences in the field of creative writing in Dogri. She narrated many interesting incidents and best poetry of her with the stalwarts of Dogri and other languages.
On the occasion, two books ‘Sanjh Bhyal’, a collection of Dogri poetry by Prof Champa Sharma and ‘In the Shadows of Memories’, an English translation of Prof Champa Sharma’s Dogri poetry ‘Chetein Di Rhol’, were released.
