JAMMU, Mar 10: 1st Additional Sessions Judge Jammu MA Chowdhary today awarded 10 years imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 to Khalil Ahmed, constable of GRP Jammu, who had stolen rifle in the year 2006.
After hearing APP Ajay Singh Manhas appearing for State, the court observed, “showing undue sympathy in favour of the convict as compared to the societal interests, is misplaced sympathy and that the appropriate sentence, commensurate to the gravity of the act of offence, should be imposed, which may also serve as a deterrence”.
“Age of convict, first offender and the inordinate delay in trial, are extenuating factors, for a lenient view , but at the same time, the fact that convict is a policeman cannot be overlooked”, the court said.
With these observations, court awarded 10 years imprisonment to the cop.
