NEW DELHI : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said the few incidents of attacks against Indians in the United States in no way reflect the ‘collective’ mood of citizenry in that country and denied that the Government of India has maintained “silence” over any such incident.
“This is not our working style at all,” Ms Swaraj told the Lok Sabha making a suo motu statement on the incidents of attacks on Indians in the United States.
She said the US administration, the Congress there and even Governors of provinces where such incidents have been reported have from time to time condemned the incidents and assured thorough probe into all such incidents.
The External Affairs Minister was making her statement pertaining to questions raised in the Lok Sabha on March 9 when M Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress) among others had alleged that the government of India and especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been maintaining “silence” over such incidents.
Ms Swaraj asserted that there has not been a single case wherein Indians were attacked overseas or faced any major problem and the BJP-led Narendra Modi regime had maintained silence.
“When one of the incidents took place Prime Minister was in election campaign. But he used to ask me on daily basis on what the Ministry of External Affairs has been doing,” she said. Earlier, as she walked into the Lok Sabha, Ms Swaraj was received by members from both sides with thumping of desks.
Members, including Union Ministers, were also up on their feet while she was being led to her seat among others by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti. Mr Kharge wished Ms Swaraj a long and healthy life while another Congress Member Jyotiraditya Scindia came to her seat and exchanged pleasantries.
A smiling Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also said it was delightful to see the senior Minister walk into the House for making a statement on an important issue. Ms Swaraj had undergone kidney transplant operation on December 10, 2016 and has been on recovery since then.  (AGENCIES)
