JAMMU, Mar 22: Federation of AYUSH Drugs Manufacturers (FADM) said that the Government is creating confusion among the masses about the quality of AYUSH medicines and presence of huge quantity of heavy metals in Ayurvedic and Unani formulations.
Addressing a press conference, Dr Virender Mahajan, President of All India Body said that the processed heavy metals and minerals are the backbone of the AYUSH drug industry because majority of the life saving medicines mention in Ayurvedic and Unani texts contain heavy metals as ingredients and all these medicines have legal sanction under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act.
“All such formulations got place in Ayurvedic Formulary of India, Unani Formulary of India and Siddha Formulary of India and even recently published Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India”, Dr Mahajan said, adding that the nefarious campaign by the vested interests in J&K is going on to check the rising popularity of the ancient systems.
Dr Mahajan demanded fool proof mechanism in selection as well as verification of medicines, adding that unethical actions on the part of State Government agencies have also shaken the faith of common man in AYUSH medicines.
He further stated that the AYUSH medicines produced in J&K are being exported to USA, South Africa, Mauritius and Sri Lanka due to their quality.
He demanded that the State Government should immediately come out with a white paper on how the legal samples were sent to private laboratories without following the procedures as defined in Drugs and Cosmetic Act, how the drugs containing heavy metals as ingredients were sent for heavy metal testing when the same were exempted from such tests and how a manipulated report generated by Vigilance was taken as legal documents.
“Government should constitute a high level committee under the chairmanship of State Chief Secretary for making a detailed draft on promotion of AYUSH drug industry and Health Tourism based on AYUSH way of living in J&K in a time bound manner”, Dr Mahajan demanded.
He said that they will take up the matter with Ministry of AYUSH for blacklisting of IIIM laboratory as the management does not know about the regulatory norms for AYUSH medicines.
