Acid thrown on girl after marriage proposal rejection

Srinagar, Apr 4: A 28-year old youth today attacked a girl with acid in North Kashmir’s Langate area of Kupwara district after she rejected his marriage proposal.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Handwara Shabir Ahmad Khan told Excelsior over phone that that a youth identified as Ajaz Ahmad Dar threw acid on a 25-year old girl (name withheld) outside her house at Qaziabad in Langate after she rejected his proposed marriage.
He said that the acid fell on some portion of girl’s face and body and she was rushed to hospital for treatment. “Thankfully she has received minor injuries and is being treated upon in the hospital. Her condition is stable,” the SDPO said, adding that though the accused is at large but his friend, Abbas Najar, who transported the acid, has been arrested.
He said that the accused is a lorry driver who has studied upto matric while the victim is a graduate. “We have formed special teams and searches to nab the main accused are underway. So far he is at large but we will get him soon,” the SDPO said. Police have registered a case under FIR number 14 under section 307 RPC.
