JAMMU, Apr 4: Dr Vikrant Singh Chandail, Surgical Gastroenterologist, working at Government Medical College Jammu, performed the first Bariatric surgery i.e. weight reduction surgery in GMC Jammu under the guidance of Professor Tariq Azad and Professor Sunil Gupta.
This surgery has been performed for the very first time in the history of Government Medical College Jammu. Moreover, the surgery was performed laparoscopically which is a minimally invasive technique of surgery without making large incision anywhere on the body. The patient was a young 28 yrs old female, weighing 129 kgs. She had undergone all types of conservative treatment to reduce her weight but was unable to do so. The patient approached the OPD of Department of General Surgery where she was made to understand that her BMI (body mass index) was 50.39 and that she came under the category of Super Obese, hence an advanced procedure was required to reduce her excessive weight.
After due consent of the patient, an advanced surgery was planned, wherein firstly the size of the stomach was reduced, followed by reduction in the length of absorptive small bowel (about 220 cms of small bowel was by passed) and finally the stomach was connected to distal part of the small intestines. This combination procedure was performed considering her specific weight of 129 kgs and height of 160cms making high BMI of 50.39.
The biggest achievement of the surgery was that the patient started taking clear liquids orally within four hours of surgery and she started strolling around within 6 hours postoperatively. Next day patient was put on regular liquid diet. Patient was discharged after two days in a stable condition.
Obesity is a major problem affecting quite a large proportion of young population with multiple causes attributed to it. Without proper treatment, obesity can lead to other serious health problems and bariatric surgery is the only option available once all conservative management fails to reduce weight.
The surgical team included Dr Subash Abrol, Dr Sanjay Raina, Dr Gopal Sharma, Dr Minal Tandon, Dr Sourabh, Dr Thinless, Dr Umar, Dr Pradeep and Dr Tajeshwar. The surgery was performed under advanced anaesthesia and the anaesthetic team was led by Dr Mukhta Jitendra, Dr Sanam and Dr Priya. The Laparoscopic Assistants included Kuljeet and Anil.
