SRINAGAR, Apr 4: Mercury plunged by several notches here in Srinagar as incessant rains lashed Kashmir valley today while higher reaches received fresh snowfall.
As was forecast by Meteorological Department, rains in city and other parts of the Valley started since wee hours and continued throughout the day. The rains in the city inundated low-lying areas including commercial hub Lal Chowk and caused massive inconvenience to the pedestrians.
The MeT department yesterday issued a weather advisory, warning of inclement weather in the State from today till April 6 due to active Western Disturbance that has affected the region.
Reports of rainfall were received from all the districts of the Valley while upper reaches including Gurez, Zojila, Mughal Road, Gulmarg and Amarnath cave received fresh snow.
Due to incessant rains and snow, the mercury in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley plunged by several notches. The day temperature in Srinagar was recorded 13.5 degree Celsius, five notches below normal, while night temperature settled at 11.2 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded 16.2 degree Celsius maximum temperature and minimum temperature was recorded as 10.2 degree Celsius.
While maximum temperature in Pahalgam was recorded 8.4 degree Celsius, the night temperature settled at 5.6 degree Celsius. The day temperature in Kupwara was recorded 11.5 degree Celsius while night temperature settled at 8.2 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature in Kokernag was recorded 15.6 degree Celsius and the night temperature settled at 9.8 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg in North Kashmir was coldest in Valley where day temperature was recorded 4.0 degree Celsius while minimum temperature settled at 1.2 degree Celsius. In Leh, the day temperature was recorded 15.3 degree Celsius and night temperature was 0.1 degree Celsius. The neighbouring Kargil recorded 14.4 degree Celsius day temperature while the night temperature settled at -1.2 degree Celsius.
The MeT department said there is forecast of widespread rains in Kashmir for next two days. Meanwhile, the inundation of the roads has caused immense hardships to the commuters as well as the pedestrians, who accused the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) of ignoring their plight.
They appealed the SMC Commissioner to look into the matter and redress their genuine grievances at earliest. One way traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road connecting of Valley with rest of the country, continued to ply normally despite heavy rains in the Valley.
According to an official in the Traffic department, “The vehicles were allowed to ply towards their destinations from Srinagar-Jammu today. In case of good weather, the traffic from Jammu-Srinagar would be allowed to ply on Wednesday,” he added.
