SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Asserting that Srinagar was the economic and heritage nerve centre of Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party today accused National Conference of exploiting the city and its residents for its own political interests.
“NC and its leadership have only exploited Srinagar for its political interests. Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah used Srinagar as a stepping stone to pursue their political carrier and even got ministerial berths in New Delhi after being elected from this parliamentary constituency. Let them explain what they have contributed”, said MLC and District President Srinagar Khursheed Alam, Member Parliament Fayaz Ahmed Mir, MLA Yawar Dillawar Mir and MLC Firdous Tak during series of election meetings in Habakadal Assembly segment here today.
The legislators said that National Conference and Congress were together responsible for the economic and development morass the State in general and Srinagar city in particular.
“The party leadership has failed to provide even basic amenities to the people, while the claims of development remained confined to papers during their rule. The money earmarked for works went into the pockets of NC leaders, their relatives and agents”, they alleged.
They said the decades old rule of NC had rendered Srinagar without a democratic voice whereas rest of the State had achieved the democratic option of choosing their representatives, the boycott politics was promoted by the ruling party to benefit from.
They said that in short span and despite unrest the present dispensation headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has taken various historical initiatives across Srinagar. people are feeling the change on the ground.
They said that the former Member Parliament representing the constituency has sided with the same persons he had sought votes against. Number of people associated with Congress and National Conference joined Peoples Democratic Party on the occasion and assured that they will reach out to the people to spread message and programmes of the party.
