JAMMU, Apr 22: National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) president Subhash Shastri today urged upon Prime Minister to declare ‘May Day’ as a gazetted holiday throughout the country under Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to May Day martyrs and recognizing the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country.
In a memorandum sent to Narendra Modi, Shastri said that because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got its rights throughout the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy across the globe and frontline welfare State should also declare May 1 as gazetted holiday. He said that this will be a great gesture and fulfill the most genuine and long-pending demands of the working class.
NMC leader further said that the then Government led by V P Singh had declared May Day as a gazetted holiday in the country in 1990. But there after no follow up action was taken by the respective Govts. Shastri hoped that the NDA Govt at the Centre will concede the long pending demand of working class and declare May Day ay as a National Holiday.
Shastri also appealed to Modi to direct the Vice Chairman of NITI Ayog, Arvind Panigraian to keep Rs 9,000 crore as special fund at the disposal of State Government to ward off likely effect implementation of recommendations of Seventh Pay Commission arrears along with incorporating financial implications of regularization of 61,000 daily rated workers.
He reminded the top leadership of NDA Government to fulfill its election promises and adopt a realistic approach to the solution of salaried/working classes problems of the country. He further appreciated the pro- people polices of Modi led Govt. at the Centre, raising minimum wage of daily rated workers to rupees 350 per day, though it is still insufficient the present flow of inflation.
He demanded setting up of National Wage Commission to evolve National Wage Policy throughout the country, exemption of DA from Income Tax slab and include Jammu city in the list of hundred smart cities.
