Govt committed to provide all assistance to construction workers: Malik

SRINAGAR, Oct 19: Mini-ster for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, Abdul Gani Malik today said that the workers engaged in building and other construction activity are given special attention so that their working conditions are safe and secure.
The Minister was addressing a meeting of J&K Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board here today.
Secretary Labour and Emp-loyment, Yedullah, Labour Com-missioner, Shahid Inayatullah, Director Finance, Resham, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Board, Syed Muried Hussain, Assistant Labour Com-missioners and various members of the Board attended the meeting.
The Minister said that the workers under this category come from remote areas and mostly floating population, as a result of which they remain scattered and unaware about their rights as provided under the law and rules.
He said under the Common Minimum Programme of the UPA Government the Social Security to the unorganized sector workers is one of the important components and Central Government is monitoring the implementation of this legislation closely.
Mr. Malik said that the implementation of this law acquires special importance for the Jammu and Kashmir in view of the large scale construction activities going on under Centre and State sponsored schemes. He further said that Government is committed to provide all possible help to registered Construction Workers (CWs) of the State through Board.
The meeting discussed various issues regarding implementation of Housing Loan Scheme, Pension Scheme, Rashtrya Swasthaya Bema Yojna (RSBY) for registered construction workers.
The Board approved Housing Loan Scheme in principle however, it was decided that a committee constituted for the purpose will work out modalities for the purpose. The meeting also discussed the issue of skill development of registered construction workers and their dependent children. It was decided that holistic view of the matter will be taken for extending the facility to the concerned beneficiaries.
