Unrest and disturbance that have taken Kashmir valley in its grip since summer last show no signs of relent. Providing peace is the fundamental duty of an elected Government. Reasons for continued unrest are many and embedded in the history of jihadism that sprang in late 1980s in Kashmir. Nevertheless, the Chief Minister has done the right thing by trying to make the youth understand the consequence of the course of violence they are driven to by elements that have no accountability. However, the Chief Minister alone will not be able to cope with the situation unless her party MLAs and workers and even those affiliated with other political parties embark on a massive campaign of bringing awareness to the masses and make them understand that they are destroying their own homes and the future of their own children. As of today, the party workers are showing no serious interest in playing their role and are not lending the type of support which the appeal of the Chief Minister needs. If these elected representatives moved freely during election campaign there is no reason why they cannot go to their constituencies and engage people in unbiased debate. They should understand the pain and poignancy reflected in the appeal of the Chief Minister.
