JAMMU, Oct 19: Central and State Governments’ claim to have curbed the social evils from the society is just an eyewash as even in the 21st century the people having lust and greed for dowry are still forcing the brides to commit suicide or eliminate them by setting them ablaze.
This was alleged by Shah Mohd, the father of a young housewife while addressing  a press conference here today. He said his daughter, Safia Bibi who was married to Mohammed Saleem was set on fire by her in-laws at their residence at Channi Rama, Malik Market near here on September 14 last year. Safai later died in the hospital after succumbing to burn injuries, he added.
Shah Mohd, a resident of New Plot Birpur, district Samba, informed that his daughter Safia was shifted to GMC Hospital Jammu in serious condition.
Incharge Police Post GMC Hospital Jammu brought the matter to the notice of Incharge Police Post Bathindi and a case under FIR No. 156 of 2011, u/s 307 RPC was registered with Police Station Bahu Fort. The statement of the victim was recorded by the police whereby Farooq Ahmad (Father-in-Law) and Raju (Mother-in-law) were arrested and bailed out on 25-10-2011, said Shah Mohd.
“On the advice of doctors, I shifted my daughter to CMC Ludhiana for specialized treatment but she could not respond to the same due to serious burn injuries and expired  on October 29 last year’’. The case under FIR No. 156/2011 was then converted into 302,147,109 and 498-A, RPC but till date no arrest has been made, he added.
