Landslide: Chardham route cleared; pilgrims evacuated to safer places

DEHRADUN, May 20: The Chamoli district administration has cleared the national highway to Badrinath Dham to a great extent and the stranded passengers in the landslide area are being evacuated from there to safer places.
Spokesman and Cabinet Minister Madan Kaushik told reporters that the Uttarakhand Government and administration were taking help of smaller vehicles to transport stranded pilgrims to safe places.
He said the Chardham yatra route is completely safe now. The motorway of the landslide area has been cleared to a great extent and the work is being done to get the pedestrians away to safer place. However, on this route, the movement of vehicles has not yet commenced.
Chamoli Superintendent of Police Satyapati Bhatt said the pedestrian path for the Chardham yatra has been opened right now. Those pilgrims who want to return from here, have been sent back through ten buses and 50 small vehicles by Vishnu Prayag route. He said till now around 1,000 pilgrims have been evacuated to safer places. Food packets were also being provided to pilgrims.
Mr Kaushik, on the instructions of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, inspected the State Disaster Operation Center, situated at the Secretariat. He added that the Chardham yatra is fully safe and successful and his government is monitoring the situation. A helpline — 1070/0135-2710334 and 0135-2710335 of the State Disaster Control Cell has also been instituted.
The Minister said the employees who do good work will be rewarded. On the occasion, Secretary, Disaster Relief, Amit Negi, Executive Director, Disaster Control, Piyush Routela, Additional Director Information Dr Anil Chandola were also present. (UNI)
