SRINAGAR, June 4: Army today paid tributes to two of its soldiers who were killed in a militant ambush at Qazigund area along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district yesterday.
A defence spokesman said in a solemn ceremony was held at Badami Bagh Cantonment here in which many senior officials from other security forces and civil administration including Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid joined Chinar Corps Commander Lt General JS Sandhu and all ranks in paying homage to the fallen soldiers on behalf of nation.
“Martyr Naik Dipak Kumar Maity, 43 years of age, had joined Army in 1997 and hailed from Midnapur in West Bengal. He is survived by his wife namely Rikta and a 13 years old daughter. Coming from Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, the young martyr Gunner (Operator) Manivannan G was only 25 years old and had donned the uniform in 2013. He is survived by his parents, mother G Chinnaponnu and father Gopal G,” the spokesman said.
The mortal remains of the soldiers will be flown for last rites to their native places where they will be laid to rest with full military honours, he said. “In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved families of the martyrs and remains committed to their dignity and wellbeing,” the defence spokesman added.
