“Few militants fired on the CRPF camp and the alert security guard retaliated the fire. Immediately, police and Army rushed to the spot and a gun battle broke out in which four militants were killed,” Kumar said.
He said that the identity and affiliation of these militants is being ascertained. He added that Police recovered patrol canes from the militants’ possession which suggested that they had to set fire the camp.
Director General of Police, Dr SP Vaid told reporters that it was a fidayeen attack that was foiled and four militants were killed. “See, today early morning at 3:45, some terrorists made a suicidal attack attempt on 45th battalion of CRPF in Sumbal in district Bandipora. The sentry was alert who retaliated the fire. The exchange of fire continued for sometime. The terrorists also lobbed some hand grenades”, he said.
Vaid said that reinforcement was immediately sent to the area and four dead bodies were recovered during searches. “Meanwhile the reinforcement was rushed from police and Army. This firefight continued for some more time. When light broke in the morning the search of the area revealed that there were four dead bodies lying of the terrorists who apparently looked not local. There was heavy arms and ammunition on their bodies, lot of live grenades, four AK 47 rifles and other incriminating material”, he said.
The DGP said that they had come with the intention to create mayhem but it was prevented by the alert CRPF men. “They had come with intention to create mayhem but fortunately our sentry was alert. Our officers and jawans retaliated effectively”, he added.
When asked whether the militants were planning Uri like attack, Vaid said: “Yes, definitely”. “We are trying to identify who these terrorists were and which organization they belong to. I think subsequently these things will become clear”, he added.
After the killings, clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in the area as youth took to streets and pelted stones on police station Sumbal to protest the killing of four militants. The area observed shutdown against the killings. Authorities suspended all cellular networks and mobile internet, except the BSNL phones, in the area to prevent any flare up in the situation.
Meanwhile, the DGP said that Jamiat-ul-Dawa (JuD) is waging a major cyber war in Kashmir and Police and other security agencies are effectively dealing with it. “JuD has declared 2017 ‘year of Kashmir’ and they with their malicious intentions are misleading children of Pakistan by saying they have to fight Jihad in Kashmir and there is no need to go to Kashmir and instead wage cyber Jihad from Pakistan only. A cyber war has been launched and we are trying to effectively deal with it. Their maximum efforts would be to create mayhem and disturbance in Kashmir which security and people of Kashmir won’t let happen”, he added.
