JAMMU, Oct 23: Samajwadi Party (SP) has criticized the Coalition Government for deferring Block Development Council (BDC) elections in the State.
In this connection the Party in its office bearers meeting here condemned the Government decision. Briefing reporters about the deliberations of the meeting here today Sheikh Abdul Rehman State president, SP and former MP said that coalition partners have slaughtered the Constitutional institutions in the State for over last six decades.
He said it is a great tragedy that during last 65 years of independence, unlike other States of the country, the BDC elections have never been held and power of Panchayats and BDC have badly been misused by the politicians and the bureaucrats as a result of unprecedented corruption, nepotism, unemployment, backdoor appointments etc. These malpractices have flourished in the state over the years giving it the status of number one corrupt State in the country.
The failure of Government in allowing the decentralization of powers, strengthening of basic institutions of democracy has led to a lot of public resentment.
In another resolution the SP alleged that the elections to BDC were deferred as the coalition was apprehending defeat during 2014 elections as the performance and popularity of the alliance partners is at lowest ebb.
He said there is a match fixing between Congress and NC and they were befooling the masses. The SP will meet Governor and submit a memorandum to him requesting him not to give his assent to the ordinance and demand that the chairman of district Planning and Development Board should be elected through an electoral college.
Ram Singh Chauhan, Mohammed Shafi Sheikh, Amrit Varsha, Pritam Gupta, Preeto Devi were also present in the press conference.
Meanwhile SP Migrant Cell president Inderji Labroo has appealed his party leadership at Delhi to take up the problems of displaced Pandits in Parliament especially the enhancement of cash relief.
