JAMMU, June 12: A Maruti Eco van has been stolen from the jurisdiction of Sarwal police post. However, the vehicle had been shifted to Srinagar from Jammu overnight by the thieves as the van has been spotted crossing the Ban Toll Plaza at Nagrota and Chenani-Nashri tunnel during the night hours.
As per sources, a Maruti Eco van bearing registration number JK02BT-4571 was stolen from the jurisdiction of Sarwal police post during the intervening night of June 11 and 12.
The vehicle belonged to Rohit Gupta, son of late Ashok Gupta, a resident of Quarter Number 213, Sarwal Last Morh.
The owner of the vehicle reported the matter to police and a case in this regard was registered at Bakshi Nagar police station.
However, the video footage obtained by the vehicle owner clearly showed that the stolen car had crossed the Ban Toll Plaza at 12.52 am and Chenani-Nashri tunnel at 2:07 am.
Due to dilly delaying tactics by the police, the accused thieves easily managed to shift the vehicle from Jammu to Srinagar overnight.
“Had the police acted swiftly, the vehicle might have been intercepted at any one of the police stations or police posts falling on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway including Nagrota, Jhajjar Kotli, Udhampur, Ramban, etc,’’ Gupta said.
He added that he had informed Police Control Room at No. 100 about theft of the car from outside his residence but still the vehicle lifter managed to drive away the car unchecked at as many police nakas on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Gupta stated that in the past also, many vehicles were stolen from the area and remained untraced.
