Snowfall at Gulmarg

SRINAGAR, Oct 24:
Light snowfall was experienced on the ski slopes of Gulmarg, where the minimum dipped to minus 5 degrees Celsius this morning, four degree below normal.
Elsewhere in the Kashmir valley, upper reaches also experienced fresh snowfall resulting in considerable drop in the temperature. However, after a cold night, people woke up to a sunny morning in the Valley.
A Met Department spokesman said there could be snowfall or rain in the upper reaches while the weather will remain dry in the plains during the next 24 hours.
Tree tops, roofs and open fields were draped with snow.
About two to three inches of snow was recorded during the night.
This was the first snowfall in Gulmarg following which the temperature dropped considerably, a hotel owner told over phone from the ski resort.
Met spokesman said the minimum dropped to minus 5 degree at Gulmarg, four degree below normal.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam also recorded minus 1.4 degree, about three degree below normal following fresh snowfall in the upper reaches.
The Holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahagunas, Panjtarni and Pisso Top also experienced light to moderate snowfall.
The winter capital, Srinagar, where the Darbar Move offices were closed to reopen at winter capital, Jammu, in the first week of November, also witnessed drop in the minimum temperature.
Met spokesman said the minimum was recorded at 2 degrees this morning, against normal of four degree during this time of the season.
People woke up to a sunny morning though cold winds continued.
Following fresh snowfall on upper reaches in the Kashmir valley, there was considerable drop in the minimum temperature.
Against normal of four degrees minimum temperature, the gateway of Kashmir, Qazigund recorded 1.6 degrees this morning while another south Kashmir tourist resort of Kokernag witnessed a drop of five degrees. It was one degree against normal of six degree, the spokesman said.
Similarly, the frontier district of Kupwara also recorded drop in the minimum temperature following snowfall on upper reaches. The minimum temperature recorded this morning was 2.4 degrees against normal of four degrees.
People in Ladakh region are also gearing up for the winter season as the temperature had started dipping with each passing day. At Leh it was minus one degree while Kargil, a border town on the Srinagar-Leh national highway recorded minus 2 degree this morning.(UNI)
