Searches in Srinagar to track militants

SRINAGAR, June 27: Security forces today conducted search operations at several places in Srinagar to hunt a group of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants who are in the city for past two weeks and 5 more militants who are locals and have shifted to city recently.
As per sources a group of five JeM militants headed by their commander Mateen Bhai is in Srinagar for two weeks and security forces are on alert to prevent them from carrying out an attack in the city.
Security forces for last two weeks are tracking them and today they conducted searches at 5 places in the city during which two persons were detained. Police and CRPF conducted searches at Firodus Abad and Khadi Mill areas of Batamaloo and detained two persons during the searches.
They also conducted searches in Khanyar, Lal Bazar and Anchar areas of Srinagar against them and other militants who are present in Srinagar. The army also conducted searches in Galib Abad and residents said that they were seeking details from the people about number of their families members.
The army exercise followed reports that a group of militants was sighted in Zanakote area of Srinagar last week who are being provided logistic support by 2-3 Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of the area. The group was later sighted in Noorbagh area but had fled the area a day before the security operation was conducted there last week.
It may be mentioned here that a communication was circulated 10 days ago to the security forces in Srinagar from the top brass of the Police in which they were asked to remain alert. They were asked to intensify security around the security forces camps and vital installations.
For last two weeks, security forces have established nakas at several places in Srinagar city especially during the night to prevent militant movement.
There are 5 local militants in Srinagar as well for last one month as they returned to Srinagar from South Kashmir. These militants who joined militancy last year were operating in South Kashmir but have now shifted to Srinagar city.
Security forces for last several years are trying to prevent militant strike in Srinagar. However, last week the Lashkar-e-Toiba tried to carry out a major strike in Srinagar by targeting in CRPF convoy in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar and then took shelter in DPS school but their attempt to cause damage to security forces was foiled and two of them were eliminated.
