Bandh in Leh, situation reviewed

JAMMU, Oct 28: Leh town today observed a peaceful bandh in protest against forced conversions of Buddhists at Padam, Zanskar in Kargil district of Ladakh region while a high level Government team today reviewed law and order situation with the civil administration and local people in separate meetings in Kargil and Zanskar.
Curfew was lifted in Zanskar yesterday after normalcy prevailed in the town following communal clashes over forced conversion of Buddhists.
Leh town observed a complete bandh today in protest against the forced conversions. Shops and other business establishment in Leh remained closed against the conversions. However, no untoward incident was reported during the bandh. Administration had made adequate security arrangements in Leh town to meet with any eventuality during the bandh.
Leh Buddhist Organisation (LBA) had given call for the bandh. The LBA has taken strong exception to the statements of Hurriyat Conference and other separatist leaders and asked them not to meddle into internal affairs of the people of Ladakh region.
Meanwhile, a high level Government team including Tourism Minister Rigjin Jora, Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani and Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Prasad today visited Zanskar and Kargil and inter-acted separately with local administration and people.
They held deliberations with representatives of both the communities and called upon them to maintain peace and tranquility in the region.
Sources said people from both the communities listed their grievances and problems. The Ministers and the DGP assured their redressal. The people assured to maintain peace in the region.
