UK University confers honorary doctorate on S P Varma

JAMMU, July 21: Vice president of Gandhi Global Family and a peace activist, Padmashri S P Varma has been conferred an honorary doctorate D Litt by UK based De Montfort University.
The honorary degree of doctorate was conferred upon him in graduation ceremony of the university, held today in Leicester, England.
Baroness Doreen Lawrence, member of House of Lords & Chancellor of De Montfort University and Prof Dominic Shellard, Vice Chancellor of De Montfort University, presented the degree to S P Varma, who was praised for his exemplary peace work and achievements.
S P Varma is the first peace activist and third Indian to be graced with the honour after the famous cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Born on 25th February 1954 in village Jandrah, Padmashri Varma joined PWD of J&K Government as a Junior Engineer. A civil engineer by profession, Varma was motivated by the peace works of Padma Vibushan Dr Nirmala Deshpande. After meeting an eminent Gandhian, he left his Government job and joined her movement in restoring peace in J&K and other parts of India.
He founded Gandhi Global Family with the help of local associates in Jammu. Later he remained instrumental in affiliating the Gandhi Global Family with United Nations Head Office New York. Today his organization is working closely with United Nations, De Montfort University and other international organizations.
During his acceptance speech, S P Varma dedicated the honour to his teachers, GGF colleagues, GGF volunteers and billions of followers of Mahatma Gandhi.
