TRCF to conduct study on Gujjars

SRINAGAR, July 30: To identify the reasons of growing poverty and backwardness among Gujjars and Bakerwals the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) has started a comprehensive village-wise study on the issue to know their educational and socio- economic status along with ethno-linguistic and cultural contour of both the identities which will be the fist-ever study in the State.
A TRCF hand-out stated that the study will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Javaid Rahi and will be completed in a shortest span of one year.
In a programme organised here by the foundation, Dr Javaid Rahi while interacting with resource persons , said ‘initially we will take up those villages which will have 100 percent tribal population of Gujjar-Bakerwal tribes and are extremely backward and listed in area where BPL population is higher.
He said the main objective of this study will be to know the reasons which adversely affect their social status, economic growth and declining educational state of affairs of both the tribal communities. Besides we will conduct cultural profiling of each village.
In second phase we will take up the villages having fifty percent population or above and in last phase we will go for study of the villages having 1 to 50% population of Gujjars and Bakerwals.
He said such studies will help in evolving plans for their social, economic and educational empowerment of tribes in eradicating poverty among tribes besides cultural preservation and promotion of tribal languages.
The study will be done to precisely to identify nomads which were not enumerated during any census held in past decades, Dr Rahi said and added that the tribal habitat and Government initiatives for their development will be studied with a survey implementation mechanism based on the facts and figures.
He said as per census 2011, the Gujjars and Bakerwals together constitute 79% of total tribal population while as other 10 tribes jointly constitute 21%.
