Sir,
There was total chaos and traffic mismanagement on the occasion of Rakshabandhan on the Udhampur-Dhar Road. People remained struck in traffic jam for hours together. Women on way to their paternal homes to tie raakhi to their brothers in high spirits and carrying their babies had a nightmarish experience with both the mothers and babies sweating profusely and children crying in humid conditions in overloaded minibuses. Some others were seen walking towards their destinations carrying their babies and other things.Hundreds of trucks, bound for the Valley, which were allowed to ply on the road at this time added to the chaos. As the jam was cleared after two -three hours, the auspicious time for tying raakhi passed away and the women felt sad and helpless, being unable to tie Raakhi during the auspicious time. The question is why our concerned Department and District administration not alive to the religious sentiments and problems of the people? They ought to devise a strategy to regulate the traffic smoothly on such days. The drivers of vehicles responsible for causing traffic jams need to be heavily fined on the spot to check violation of traffic rules. The trucks ought to be either stopped or allowed to cross Udhampur in the early hours of the morning. The Department should press more Traffic Police personnel and buses and minibuses into service to provide a hassle fee and safe journey to the women on this auspicious day.The Govt should act tough on the officers responsible for such sorry state of affairs and ensure that traffic is properly managed on such days and pepole donot suffer for no fault of theirs.
Yours etc….
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur.
