Srinagar, Aug 14: The High Court today directed the Government to provide information about the number of prisoners in jails and the intake capacity of these jails.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice M K Hanjura directed State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) and Director General prisons to file their status report by next date indicating therein in capacity of jails with break-up of convicts, under-trials, women as also those who have been imprisoned under PSA and their period of imprisonment in jails.
Court while referring the Supreme Court ruling on jail inmates directed the Secretary SLSA to deal with the nine issues referred by the SC with regard to jail inmates and file status report by next date with regard to all these issues.
DG prisons been directed to inform the court the number of persons who are brought to jails on every month and released every month so that the input and output capacity of jails be known. State counsel B A Dar submitted that details of under trials is available but not with regard to other prisoners.
Court has observed that SLSA will have to work on conditions and other facilities are provided to jail inmates. SLSA counsel submitted before the court that a comprehensive report be filed in this connection by next date.
CJ observed most concern is delay in trial and overcrowding in the jails. SLSA counsel, while giving assurance to court, submitted that all the requirements to jail inmates be covered.
Court has also observed that report should mention as to how many women along with their children are lying in the jails.
