Srinagar, Aug 21: Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society (JKCS) today sought a special session of State’s Legislature over Article 35-A of the Constitution and said that the Government of J&K is constitutionally bound to protect State Subject Law.
Members of JKCS, an amalgam of Kashmir’s trade and civil society organizations, addressed a press conference here and appealed all political parties except Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) to call for special session of both Legislative Assembly as well as Legislative Council over 35-A which has been challenged in Supreme Court.
The JKCS members said that the State Government is constitutionally bound to protect the Article 35-A. “They have taken oath to protect it,” said JKCS member Ghulam Nabi Shaheen. Meanwhile, Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) staged a protest against alleged attempts to abrogate the Article 35-A in press enclave here and tried to march towards Raj Bhawan.
The members of KEA led by its chairman Farooq Ahmad Dar assembled at press enclave and started sloganeering against the attempts to abrogate State Subject Law. The protesters were carrying banners and placards and tried to march towards Raj Bhawan but a contingent of police deployed there prevented them from proceeding ahead. The police detained Farooq Dar and other KEA members and were taken to nearby police station.
