Sir,
This refers to ‘Othello’in Dogri under the caption ‘Book Review'(DE August 20, 2017).It is really heartening to read that Mr Madan Gopal Padha has translated the famous Shakespearean play’Othello’into Dogri. The learned writer has the credit of already translating the famous historical play ‘Julius Caeser’ by William Shakespeare, into Dogri with an enlightening preface by Late Prof Luxmi Narayan Sharma, who was considered to be an authority on Shakespeare. He has dwelt at length about the growth and development of English and life, works and times of the great Bard as Shakespeare is known .Now Mr Padha has translated the famous tragedy’Othello’ into Dogri, our mother tongue and has thus, produced a book which can be the pride of the shelves of book lovers, who are interested in Shakespearean literature, especially his famous tragedies.Translating a work from one language into another language is an uphill task and more so from English into Dogri as it is very difficult to find such words as can justifiably and adequately express the original English terms, emotions, intrigues etc in Dogri. But it is the writer’s passion, hardwork and devotion that has resulted in such a famous tragedy as Othello being translated into Dogri and made available to the Dogras to read and appreciate the Shakespearean art, wit and humour. For his sincere endevour, the writer deserves to be appreciated. The book ought to be supplied to the libraries of schools, colleges, universites etc so that more and more people can read and appreciate it.The fact that the writer has dedicated the Dogri version of the play to the legendery Dogri playwright and poet, Dinubhai Pant as a tribute on his centenery celebrations, makes the book all the more valuable and worth reading.
Yours etc…
