JAMMU, Aug 30:  Congress workers held a strong protest demonstration against the  State Government for its utter failure to provide basic facilities of life to the people.
A large number of party workers,  led by PCC  general secretary  Vikram Malhotra, carrying placards  in their hands raising slogans, assembled at Chowk Chabutra and in a shape of procession marched  towards Parade via Moti Bazar and sat at dharna in front of PDD office Parade Ground and registered  protest against the PDP-BJP Government.
Speaking on the occasion, Malhotra said that  people are facing great hardships due to long scheduled and unscheduled power cuts and scarcity of drinking water. The most unfortunate is that despite non-availability of electricity,  PDD authorities  have put double load on consumers and increased rent  many folds beyond the reach  of common man. The people  have been compelled to visit the concerned PDD offices to enquire about their bills but all in vain.

In the absence of  electric power, the drinking water supply has also been affected. Besides the provision of subsidized sugar at Govt ration depots has already been ceased and only Atta/rice on nominal quantity on higher rates is available. The condition of roads, link roads, lanes and drains is deplorable and what to talk of Govt hospitals and Super Specialty Hospital where there are no medicines for patients and even on the intervention of Chief Minister nothing has been  improved.
Referring to the repeated terrorist attacks happening in the country Malhotra said that almost everyday jawans of army, police and para- military forces have been martyred in the State and militancy is on the rise. The State and Centre Governments are confused and clueless about the policy of Pakistan.  He said to divert the attention of the people from basic issues there is debate being generated regarding scraping of Article 35-A.  He said that Article 35-A is sub-judice and everybody should refrain from commenting on it.
Prominent among those who participated in the protest included  Balbir Singh,  Ajay Khanna, Pawandev Singh,  Rinku Mehra, Michal Wazir,  Raj Kumar Mehra, Maqbool Ahmed and Jugal Kishore.
