CHENNAI, Sept 1: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms Smriti Irani  today urged the students to look back with pride, the country’s freedom movement and  thank the freedom fighters, whose sacrifices had helped the country to free itself from  the clutches of the British rule.
Participating in the ‘Sankalp Se Siddhi’ event to celebrate the 70th Independence Day  and the 75th year of Quit India Movement here, she said ”students and people form all  walks of life should get together to build India as Nation of our dreams”.
Recalling the freedom movement, she said while several countries took up arms to  revolt against the British, it was India, which showed the world that even the one biggest  power in the world could be defeated through the path of non-violence.
Referring to the administering of pledge to people in various walks of life for building  a New India, Ms Smriti Irani said, India, as one of the biggest democracies in the world,  should be proud that leaders from the most humble background could make it to the  highest posts in the country.
She pointed out that the President of the country was from the depressed section,  the Vice-President was the son of a farmer, the Prime Minister was the son of a woman,  who had raised him by doing household chores and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha was  a woman.
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India poverty free,  Ms Smriti Irani said people who could afford to make small sacrifices, could help  at least one underprivileged so that India would become a prosperous Nation by  2022.
Pointing out to the steps taken by the Government to promote entrepreneurship  among the people, she said 80 billion loans have been sanctioned under the Mudra  scheme so that people could turn employment generators, rather than employment  seekers.
She said under the Jan Dhan Yojana, 300 million people have opened bank  accounts which would ensure that the benefits of the government schemes go  to the beneficiary without any leakage. (UNI)
