Counselling Cells

Sir,
This has reference to the news item’Counselling Cells must in schools, colleges:Altaf'(DE, Aug 23, 2017).It is heartening to read that the Minister for Education,Altaf Bukhari has said that setting up of counselling cells in educational institutions is imperative for students’ guidance and  such an exercise would lead to massive participation of students in education reforms and that the Government is keen to establish such cells in the educational institutions at the earliest. There is no doubt that students, especially from classes 9th to 12th are under heavy stress and  intense pressure due to biological, emotional and psychological changes during this period.
Moreover, unrealistic and high aspirations of parents coupled by cut throat competition, students find it difficult to cope up with the stress and pressure and unfortunately, some of them, unable to do so, take to the extreme step of ending their lives.Similarly, it is at this stage that students choose their career plans and they need to be properly guided and imparted career counselling to exercise their wise choice about their career.Counselling is also needed to avoid cases of violence or bullying in schools and check dropping out of students. Moreover, it is through counselling that students get an opportunity to share their views about academics, examinations, curriculum, education system and other related issues. Therefore, there is dire need to establish counselling cells in schools and colleges to provide proper counselling to the students on stress, career and other issues and age specific problems.
It is also appreciable that  the Education Minister also interacted with the students of various schools under the ‘Ru-ba-ru’ programme organised by DSEK, answered their questions  and listened to their problems.Such interaction is vital for forging closer bonds between the government and the students.
Yours etc…
