JAMMU, Sept 5: Top Army Commanders had a narrow escape when Army’s Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter crashed at Tsogstalu helipad in Eastern Ladakh, where India shared un-demarcated Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China this afternoon.
Reports said General Officer Commanding (GOC), Leh based 14 Corps, Lt Gen SK Upadhyay and Major General Savneet Singh, who commands Army’s 3 Infantry Division, based at Karu, about 40 kilometers from Leh, were among the Army officers and crew on board the helicopter, which faced control-related issue at Tsogstalu helipad in Eastern Ladakh at 1.30 pm.
Reports said both pilots onboard the helicopter were also safe.
“No one was injured in the crash,” they added.
Leh-based 14 Corps, which is also called Fire and Fury Corps, is a key formation of the Army responsible for defences along Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battle field and Eastern Ladakh along LAC with China.
A Court of Inquiry has been ordered by the Army into the helicopter crash, reports said.
There have been 19 incidents involving the indigenous Dhruv helicopter after it was inducted. The Army and Air Force depend heavily on the helicopter which is capable to operating at extreme altitudes in the Siachen and the Ladakh region.
