JAMMU, Sept 9: Team Jammu and others today paid rich tributes to Major Akash Singh on his martyrdom day.

A large number of people, including students from various schools from different parts of city assembled at Saheed Major Akash Memorial Park at Rajpura Mangotrian today to remember sacrifice of the martyr for the country.
Major Akash Singh, had attained martyrdom while fighting terrorists during an encounter on Line of Control in Poonch district on September 9, 2009.
Locals and family members of the martyred officer, paid floral tributes to Major Akash Singh. Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Shamsher Singh Manhas, who was chief guest on the occasion, said that such events not only refresh contributions of the Army but also made people bond themselves with the sacrifices of martyrs. He said that the whole nation is indebted to Major Akash Singh for his supreme sacrifice. “Those who attain supreme sacrifices for nation are lucky ones and we must stand by the family members of martyrs so that they don’t feel alienated,” he added.
On the occasion, a Dogri poem on valiant martyrs was presented by noted poet Randheer Singh Raipuria, which left the entire gathering in tears.
Chairman of Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, who presided over the function, said that people should not forget the days when our soldiers give their lives while guarding borders for nation’s safety. He said that the youth must unite and stand in support of our forces so that they may not feel demoralized in the hands of anti-national elements.
Asking the State Government to recognize the supreme sacrifices of the martyr soldiers by announcing a comprehensive policy on the pattern of neighbouring States like Punjab, Harayana, Himachal Pradesh as well as UP, Bihar and Maharashatra, Zorawar Singh Jamwal said that people of Jammu should feel proud that Dogras have sacrificed their lives for the dignity and honour of Mother India.
State BJP president Sat Sharma and students of Dr B R Ambedkar Convent High School and Devan Devi Higher Secondary School participated in the tributes paying function.
J&K Freedom Fighters Association (JKFFA) also remembers Major Akash Singh on his martyrdom day.
A programme in this connection was organized by president of the Association, Ved Gandotra at Dogra Shourya Sthal, Amphalla here where students and staff members of Luthra Higher Secondary School were also present. Floral tributes were paid to the martyr by lighting candles. Two-minute silence was also observed in his honour.
Those who spoke on the occasion, included State president of Shri Ram Sena, Rajiv Mahajan, Brij Mehra, Sushil Verma, Prabhat Kapahi, Ram Rattan Raina, Sanjeev Luthra and others.
