Army foils major infiltration bid, militants attack CRPF in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Army today foiled a major infiltration bid of militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Kupwara while militants this evening attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Srinagar.

A Defence spokesman said here that Army deployed in forward posts in Keran noticed movement of a group of militants who were trying to infiltrate. The troops challenged them leading to a gun battle. However, during the search of the area, no militant or body was found.
“An infiltration bid was foiled by the Army in Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district last night,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said during the searches this morning, soldiers recovered two AK rifles, four magazines, 60 rounds, one pistol and other war-like stores.
Sources said that 5-6 militants tried to sneak in but fled back under the cover of darkness when troops challenged them. Massive searches have been launched in the area to ensure that no militant managed to sneak in.
Army said that over 150 militants are waiting on the launch pads for infiltration ahead of winter but troops are on high alert to foil their attempt.
In the meantime, militants this evening fired at a convoy of 132 Battalion of CRPF at Sanatnagar Bypass in Srinagar. The CRPF men fired back. However, militants managed to escape without causing any damage.
Security forces have launched searches in the area against the militants who attacked the CRPF.
And Army today said that the three militants who were killed in Shopian district of South Kashmir last evening were involved in luring local youth.
Commanding Officer of 44 RR of Army Col DS Nagi told reporters that Hizbul Mujahideen commander Zahid Mir was involved in luring local youth into militancy. “Zahid has been instrumental in recruiting and luring boys into militancy and now the recruitment would come under control. These people have done lot of work in recruitment of boys, lured them and recruited them into terrorist outfits. They have carried out many terrorist actions, ambushes and besides they have also threatened many people and resorted to extortion”, he said.
Col Nagi said that killing of these three HM militants is a major success for the troops. “It is a major success for forces because one they were local terrorists of Shopian who have been eliminated and second Zahid has escaped in past but this time the input was perfect and we trapped him”, he said.
Police today said that these three Hizb militants were involved in many anti-national and anti-social activities. “Zahid Ahmad Mir along with Irfan Abdullah Ganie were involved in weapon snatching at residential guard at Tukroo. They were also involved in attack on constable Mohammad Ashraf resident of Keegam at his residence. Besides the duo were involved in many FIR’s of Police Station Shopian, Zainapora and Keller”, said Police.
“Zahid was also involved in many firing incidents including firing on residential house of MLA Shopian, residential house of Farooq Ahmad resident of Tukroo Shopian, Police guard Pinjer and Police Station Shopian”, Police said.
Police said: “Irfan Abdullah Ganie was involved in the attack on 55RR and 14 Bn CRPF at Heff. Asif Ahmad Paul was involved in case FIR number 75/2016 under Section 379 RPC, 6 Forest Act of Police Station Keller. As has been reported that acting on a tip off, Shopian police along with 44 RR and 14 Bn CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Gatipora Keller area of Shopian district. During searches, terrorists hiding in the area fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated, ensuing an encounter”.
