Various schemes launched for downtrodden sections of society: Sakina

JAMMU, Nov 9: Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo today said that the State Government under the leadership of Omar Abdullah has launched a massive welfare programmes for the upliftment of downtrodden, poor, widows, destitute, and the communities living below the poverty line including SC, ST categories.
She said the Coalition Government during the last 3 and half years rule has taken a number of steps particularly for women folk for their economic well being and self-reliance and special attention is being paid on the welfare of mothers and their babies by providing necessary requisite nutrition, protein and food besides immediate and timely medical checkups at Anganwari centres.
The Minister said that presently 5 lakh people are benefitted under old age pension scheme and widows are also being provided financial assistance so that they may be able to live with honour and dignity. She said that lakhs of children are being provided nutrition in 28000 Anganwari centres throughout the State.
She said that the Women’s Development Corporation is also working for the betterment of women folk and providing soft loans to enable women folk to set up their own income generating units.
The Minister said that cash incentives are also being provided for improving health and nutrition to pregnant and lactating women. She also referred IGMSY and SABLA scheme which is presently under implementation in Kathua and Anantnag districts.
