It is highly regrettable and unfortunate that corneal blind people in the region of Jammu have no hope of gaining light although with modern technology it is possible to give them the light. Why the Government is not seriously considering opening of an Eye Bank which is the most important step in providing eyesight to the blind? A large population of blind people have to go out of the State for treatment and replacement of eye which is a costly and cumbersome task.
In 2013 two eye banks were sanctioned one each for Srinagar and Jammu Government Medical College and Hospital. While the Eye Bank in Srinagar has become functional, the Eye Bank in Jammu is still under construction and is not complete. Why it could not be completed within the specific time is an old question for which no satisfactory answer is forthcoming. We wish that authorities concerned had the understanding of the suffering of our blind people so that they would have not wasted a single day in providing the eyesight to the needy.
This Bank has enormous importance for Jammu region because the poor blind people cannot afford to go to other cities and get specialized treatment.
