SRINAGAR : Militants gave slip to security forces after a brief encounter in the north Kashmir district of Bandipora during which a jawan of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police was killed on Sunday.
Earlier report said two militants were killed. However, during the search operation in the area when there was no firing, no body of any militant was recovered, official sources said.
They said troops of 13 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint operation following a tip-off about the presence of militants at Mir Mohalla, Hajin in Bandipora district at 0530 hrs this morning.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the Mohalla, militants resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated ensuing an encounter.
An SOG jawan identified as Zaheer Abbas was injured in the encounter who was admitted to 92 Army Base hospital in Srinagar. However, SOG jawan later succumbed, they said.
It was reported that two Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were hiding in the densely populated area. However, when there was no firing, it was believed that both the militants have been killed.
Later during the search of the area, no militant body was found and it was reported that the militants had managed to escape. There were also protests in the area when the operation against the holed up militants was launched. (AGENCIES)
