Demand for chocolates rising this festive season: Survey

NEW DELHI, Nov 11: Demand for chocolates is steadily increasing this festive season on account of corporates using it as a gift item, industry body Assocham said today.
In its survey, Assocham said demand for chocolates has risen in all major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahemdabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Patna.
“Wary of the quality of traditional sweets, people have been flooding chocolates boutiques with gift orders, which have been increasing,” it said.
It said majority of confectioners, who participated in the survey, accepted that the increase in demand for chocolates is primarily due to increasing adulteration in traditional sweets.
“The demand has gone up with each passing year. Since the past two or three years there has been a lot of interest in branded and sugar free chocolates during the festive season,” the survey said, adding that a box of chocolates costs lesser than the kaju barfi.
Chocolate sellers also said they are receiving bulk chocolate orders from corporates.
The consumption of chocolates are steadily increasing and its market size is expected to cross Rs 7,500 crore by 2015 from the current Rs 4,500 crore, the survey added. (PTI)
