JAMMU, Nov 4: Expressing serious concern over the plight of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals who are deprived of basic amenities by the authorities, Shamsher Hakla Poonchi, a Gujjar leader and intellectual of J&K today urged the Government to provide all basic facilities to nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals in the J&K.
Hakla said that nomadic Gujjar and Bakerwal are backward in comparison to the developed communities. They are homeless and landless wandering in the open. Other people live as social beings but these people live around quadrupeds all their life time.
He said that this nomadic Gujjar-Bakerwal community mostly resides in far flung and hilly mountainous areas near forests. That is why this community has its own peculiar position and a distinctive identity.
Hakla said that these helpless people are leading a miserable and hard life and deprived of basic amenities. He appealed that Government should take effective steps in providing benefits of all welfare schemes launched from time to time to these people.
