JAMMU, Nov 8: A group of burglars today struck at a mobile phone shop just few meters away from Nowabad Police Station and decamped with phones worth several lakhs. However, the theft in a shop just few meters away from a police station has put a big question mark on the working of the Police Department.
As per police sources, a group of seven thieves, some of whom were masked, entered into a mobile shop located just few meters away from the Police Station Nowabad at around 5:15 am. One of the gang members entered the shop and comes out within 15 minutes with mobile phones and left the spot along with his associates.
Ravi Kant, the owner of the shop, a resident of Shiv Nagar noticed the shutter of the shop damaged when he was on morning walk and immediately lodged a complaint with Police Station Nowabad.
“I was moving through the area around 6 am when I noticed the shutter of the shop damaged and immediately lodged a complaint with the police. Mobile phones worth several lakhs have been stolen from the shop”, he stated in his complaint.
Meanwhile, a nearby shopkeeper expressed resentment over an incident.
“It is astonishing that the shop located just few meters from the Police Station Nowabad has been looted in the early morning”, he rued.
The locals also termed it as security threat and sought immediate action against the culprits as some of them were seen visible in the CCTV footage.
“This was first of its kind theft in Jammu and the thieves seemed to be professionals, the way they did an act”, they added.
“The theft and that too just few meters away from Nowabad Police Station, had raised a big question mark over the working of the Police Department. Had the area was patrolled by the police personnel with dedication and professionalism, such kind of theft could not have taken place”, the shopkeepers added.
After registering a case under relevant Sections at Police Station Nowabad, efforts are on to bring the culprits to book and recover the stolen goods, said a police official, adding that mobile phones worth Rs 13 lakh were looted from the shop.
“We have seen the CCTV footage and it appears that the gang members are from outside. We are hopeful of working out the case in the coming days”, he added.
