NEW DELHI: Taking a swipe at the Finance Ministry over the GST council reducing the GST on several items from 28 per cent to 18 per cent over four months after the implementation of the GST, senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said it took four months and 10 days for common sense to ”germinate, flower and ripen into a fruit”.
In a series of tweets, Mr Chidambaram said, ”the Ministry of Finance must be complimented for ‘improving’ macro-economic situation in 4 months and 10 days. It is the time taken for common sense to germinate, flower and ripen into a fruit.”
The GST Council on Friday reduced the GST on several items from 28 per cent to 18 per cent.
Following the decision taken by the GST council, Mr Chidambaram had said the reduction of GST tax on several items had vindicated the stand taken by the Congress.
”Congress is vindicated. I am vindicated. The merit of capping GST at 18 per cent is now recognised,” he said in a series of tweets last night.
”Congress party’s next goal will be to push for one rate: RNR with an RNR plus and an RNR minus.
When GST rate is capped at 18%, this Govt would have learnt its lesson belatedly,” he said. Attributing the decision of the government to bring down the GST rates to the upcoming assembly polls in Gujarat, Mr Chidambaram said, ”Thank you Gujarat.
Your elections did what Parliament and common sense could not do.” (AGENCIES)
