SRINAGAR, Nov 14 : Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said that comprehensive city development looms large in the Government policy and attention has been given to upgrade basic amenities and address urban problems in twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu.
Inaugurating Rs. 69.50 core Rawalpora-Tengpora Storm Water Drainage Scheme here this afternoon, Omar Abdullah said that focus is on creating better drainage and sewerage systems besides improving and expanding road communication network in Jammu and Srinagar.
“While schemes for construction of flyovers and setting up of sewerage treatment plants are being implemented in the twin cities, widening of roads, management of transport, creation of parking lots and facilities to cater to modern urban needs are being attended on scientific lines”, he added .
The Chief Minister said that the restoration of peaceful situation in the State has helped to upgrade pace of development works and reach out to every area in the process of progress. He said more than 11 lakh visitors visited here and helped in generation of wide-ranging economic activities for the people.
Omar Abdullah said that Rawalpora-Tengpora Storm Water Drainage Scheme executed by Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) is one of the major drainage packages to be completed under the urban component of ongoing multi-sector Project for Infrastructure Rehabilitation funded by Asian Development Bank.
The scheme involved construction of 23.50 Kms of storm water drainage network spread over an area of 3.50 sq kms consisting of 18.60 Km of sub-main drain, 3.26 Km of trunk drain, 1.6 Km of Main drain and pumping station near Tengpora bridge having the discharge capacity of 68 cusecs during storm conditions.
The construction of the Rawalpora-Tengpora Storm Water Drainage Scheme will provide relief from frequent flooding to the residents during winters and rainy seasons. The project will directly benefit about 29,000 people living on both sides of National Highway by-pass from Rawalpora Chowk to Tengpora bridge which includes residential areas of Shah Anwar Colony, Waza Bagh, Green Avenue, Budshah Colony Gulbahar Colony, Old Hyderpora, Al-Noor Colony, Qayoom Lane, Goripora, Bagh-i-Hyder, Abraham Colony, Sheikh-ul-Alam Colony, Hyderpora, Gulberg Colony, etc.
The work on other two Storm Water Drainage Projects namely Pohru Chowk-Chanapora bridge and Bemina Fruit Mandi is also in progress and likely to be completed soon.
Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Nasir Aslam Wani and Legislator Mohammad Irfan Shah also spoke on the occasion while MLA Mohammad Yasin Shah and MLC Dharam Vir Singh Obroi were present on the occasion.
