Transporters threaten to go on indefinite strike

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Nov 16:  All the transporters from Jammu province today resolved to go on indefinite strike, if the State Government fails to address their pending issues.
An emergency meeting of all the transport unions/ groups from Jammu province,  under the banner of All J&K Transport Welfare Association led by its chairman, T S Wazir was held here today. The presidents/ representatives of buses, trucks, tankers, mini- buses, tankers, / sumos/tempo travelers/  taxies  and autorikshaws  Unions also attended the meeting.
All the speakers expressed great resentment on the attitude of the Government towards transporters of J&K State. They said the Central and State Governments   have increased the rates of fees, taxes, insurance, penalties withdrawal of Adda Fee, fee for issuance of fitness certificate and so on and under such circumstances the transporters are unable to bear the additional burden on them.
They pointed out that transporters had given 72-hour strike call in January 2017  and also again on March 29, 2017. Now again, one day strike was observed on November 6, 2017. But it seems that State Government  is   not serious about the issues of the transporters/ operators.  Instead of this all, the State Government passed MVA Ordinance which was approved by the State Governor in which fee , taxes , penalties and other taxes have been  increased by 300 percent. The transporters in no case are ready to bear this burden on them.
They claimed that  Government was forcing them to come out on the roads by ignoring their issues. They warned to launch indefinite strike if the  State Government failed to address their issues within days. They said the wheels  of vehicles right from  Lakhanpur to Srinagar will remain jammed during the strike and state Government will be responsible for any inconvenience to the general public.
