NEW DELHI: Around 60 per cent of the people feel Delhi is not safe for women and children, according to a white paper released today by an NGO, Praja Foundation.
The white paper on the “Status of Crime and Policing in Delhi” compiled data based on a survey involving 24,301 respondents.
It said 50 per cent of the people do not feel secure in the national capital. A meagre 17 per cent do not feel safe in Mumbai.
The situation is worse when it comes to the safety of women, children and senior citizens in Delhi.
About 60 per cent of the people do not feel the national capital is safe for women, children and senior citizens. 25 per cent of the Mumbai residents have similar views about their city.
Almost 57 per cent of the people do not feel secure while travelling in Delhi. Of these, 63 per cent expressed apprehensions about travelling in northeast Delhi, according to the white paper.
Around 57 per cent of the victims of crime in Delhi did not report the matter to police.
One in every 14 people in Delhi over the age of 18 has been a victim of crime. One-third of such people did not report the incident to police, according to the white paper.
Of the total 24,301 survey participants in Delhi, 15 per cent faced incidents of theft, murder, etc whereas only five per cent of the people became victim of crime in Mumbai.
Of the 43 per cent people who informed police about crime in Delhi, 76 per cent were dissatisfied with the force’s response.
Almost half of the survey participants in Mumbai were happy with the police response.
Respondents from Chandni Chowk (21 per cent) and northwest Delhi (21 per cent) were the least satisfied with the police response. (AGENCIES)
