JAMMU, Nov 24: In a meeting held at the Corporation Head Office, PK Bhandari, Deputy General Manager (DGM), National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC), New Delhi, briefed the Vice Chairperson of J&K SC, ST, BC Development Corporation, Balbir Ram Rattan, regarding schemes for rehabilitation of the members of Safai Karamchari/Manual Scavenger community.
Managing Director RK Pandita, Health officer, GMC, Dr Anita Salgotra, officers of Corporation including FA/CAO, VK TAK, Divisional Manager Jammu, GQ Khatana, Divisional Manager Kashmir, Arshad Majid Bhat and Project Manager, Mohd Iqbal Kataria, were also present in the meeting.
The DGM, who is on 3-day visit to the State, gave a power point presentation on various schemes being taken into hand exclusively for the socio-economic upliftment of the Safai Karamcharis, Manual Scavengers and rag-pickers.
He said that the objective of these schemes is to provide alternate dignified job options for the target people of the society for elimination of insanitary latrine, prohibition of hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks and eradication of manual scavengers. It was also informed that the NSKFDC provides funds for these schemes at very liberal terms to rehabilitate by way of cash assistance, skilling, loan subsidy and health camps etc.
It was further told that the schemes are also introduced as part of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” campaign of the Central Government. It was impressed upon in the meeting that awareness campaign must be initiated to introduce these schemes at the grassroot level to the pockets of the population of Safai Karamcharis and help them get freedom from their traditional job of rag picking.
RK Pandita shared the progress of the ongoing loan status of the financial assistance provided to the beneficiaries belonging to the Safai Karamchari community and the different modes used to cover the said population. He also discussed the bottlenecks being faced in implementation of the welfare schemes among the said community in the State.
