Gujjars deprived of benefits under ST status: Hakla

JAMMU, Nov 25: Shamsheer Hakla Poonchi a prominent Gujjar leader and intellectual of the State today expressed grave concern over the step motherly treatment given by State Government to the Gujjar and Bakerwal community and accused it of its failure in implementing the ST status granted to the community 26 years back by the Central Government.
In a statement issued here, today he said with the failure of Government to implement the ST status fully the Gujjars and Bakerwals are being deprived of various opportunities provided by the Union Government for the welfare of weaker sections of the society from time to time.
Hakla said these people are leading a miserable life in far-flung and remote areas of State with no proper amenities available to them. They even lack schooling and medicare facilities and many times the pregnant women or serious patients die on way to the hospital due to lack of facilities in their areas.
In view of the problems faced by the Gujjars and Bakerwals, Hakla has made an appeal to Prime Minister to announce a special package for these hapless people and also demanded that a special drive be launched for their recruitment in army, para military forces and police as the Gujjars and Bakerwals are patriots by core and have always served their motherland in the hour of need.
He also demanded that the Gujjar be provided their share in development funds also.
