WD again eludes, chill to intensify in Kashmir; Leh freezes at – 7.3 deg C

SRINAGAR: A Western Disturbance has again eluded the region which will further intensify chill in Kashmir valley and Ladakh, where minimum temperature was below freezing point.
A Met department spokesperson said on Tuesday that a fresh WD, which originated in the Arabian Sea, had entered the region. But, he said, it didn’t exactly hit the state, adding it however, resulted in cloudy skies.
“Light rain or snow could occur at isolated places in the Valley in the evening on Tuesday,” he said. However, he said from Wednesday onwards the sky will be clear, which could result in further dip in the night temperature.
Leh and border town of Kargil were the only two places in the region which witnessed improvement in the night temperature due to cloudy skies though they were still below freezing point.
Even though there was an improvement of about a degree in the night temperature from yesterday at Leh in Ladakh region, it was still the coldest place in the region at minus 7.3 degree.
The mercury at the border town of Kargil witnessed an improvement of 4 degree from yesterday and settled at minus 6.4 degree Celsius, still the second coldest place in the region.
He said sky will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 8 degree C and minus 8 degree C respectively.
The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, further dipped and settled at minus 3.9 degree, against minus 3.1 degree C recorded yesterday. The night temperature was 2 degree below normal.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, also witnessed a dip of about 2 degree from yesterday in the night temperature, which settled at minus 3.4 degree. Meanwhile, people woke up to a cloudy and chilly morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, where night temperature further dipped and settled about 2 degree below normal.
Against minus 0.4 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature at Srinagar was minus 1.9 degree. The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag also dipped and settled at minus 2.2 degree C, minus 2.1 degree C and minus 1.4 degree C, respectively.
