National Safai Karamcharis Welfare Society highlights demands

JAMMU, Nov 17: National Safai Karamcharis Welfare Society of India held a meeting under the chairmanship of Jang Bahadur and BR Gill, in which Valmiki and Christian community members participated.
During the meeting various other issues were discussed including issuance of permanent resident certificate to the safaikaramcharis called up in J&K in 1955 from Punjab for manual scavenger work, regularization of colonies, technical training, medical facilities, allotment of residential plots to the Safaikaramchari community and proper implementation of the various schemes made by the Government.
While speaking, Jang Babadur pointed out that this part of the society has been exploited by the Government as well as by so called civil society by using the services for manual scavenging from several decades.
As per National Commission for Safaikaramcharis, monthly medical check is mandatory but no such benefit has been extended to the workers of this community, he informed.
Suhasni Vasisatha, Chief Patron and Legal Advisor of Society emphasized on the need for legal reform and proper monitoring of laws related to manual scavenging as well as accountability of concerned officials to end the gross violation of basic human rights and dignity of manual scavengers.
Among other present were Jarnail Khokhar, Kartar Singh, Ranbal Singh, Junus Mahshi, Munish Mahshi, Rajesh, Jatinder Pal, Rawel Singh, etc.
