Losar Festival of Likir village revived

Excelsior Correspondent LEH, Dec 22: Lhukhil Gonyul Thundel Tsogspa on attaining its silver Jubilee year revived the Losar Festival of Likir village, which was abandoned 44 years back in 1973. The long lost ancestral Losar carnivals like Abi-meymey, Lama Jogi and Karok performances have brought back into life today at Likir which the younger generations of the village have never witnessed before. To mark this historic occasion, a grand celebration was held today at Likir where the CEC, LAHDC, Leh Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo was the chief guest whileas Ashok Chakra Tsering Morup, the native retired soldier was the guest of honour. The Executive Councilor Agriculture, Tsering Wangdus was also present on the occasion. While speaking, Dr Dawa said that such festivals hold the importance of our identity and traditions and therefore each and every Ladakhis must contribute to safeguard those values with the guidance from our elderlies. CEC said that LAHDC is in active process of formulating a comprehensive planning to promote winter festivals of Ladakh that would not only help to preserve the vanishing culture but would also help to promote winter tourism in the region. As a token of gift on behalf of Council, CEC announced Rs 50,000 to Lukhil Gonyul Thundel Tsogspa for further promotion of Losar festival and other important traditions. The Executive Councilor Tsering Wangdus appealed the people of other villages to revive important chapters of Losar if they had somehow discarded Losar celebration. The Head Lama of Likir Gonpa Rev. Lobzang Tsultim put forth a demand of bringing the whole village under the coverage of mobile facility as the existing tower fails to cover entire village. In response to this demand, EC, Tsering Wagdus said that Council is doing hard to improve the mobile phone facility in whole district and said that JIO Company has also done a wide-ranging feasibility survey in the district and it is expected to improve mobile service in all the areas soon.
