JAMMU, Dec 25: Chhamb refugees settled along International Border in RS Pura, Arnia, Suchetgarh and Ramgarh areas have urged the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to settle their issues on priority.
In a press release issued here, Sub (retd) Ajit Singh, an RTI activist stated that most of the land allotted to Chhamb refugees by the Government is on Pak side of the border fencing and not available to them for cultivation due to border firing and other restrictions imposed by the Army and BSF.
He said that this is leading to huge loss to poor farmers living on the border with Pakistan and the Government is not paying due heed to this grave issue. “Although country’s defence needs are also very important but Government should not ignore these refugees who are affected badly”, he said, adding, the poor farmers should be compensated adequately and in a regular interval of time.
The RTI activist further urged the Government to compensate the farmers for damage of their houses as well as crops and killing of cattle due to border shelling. He said that earlier also he had taken up the issue with the Chief Minister of the State and sent copies of his representations to PM, Speaker, Army Chief and DG BSF. Though Speaker has instructed DC to look into the matter, nothing has been till date to solve their issues, he further said and appealed CM Mehbooba Mufti to solve the issues of Chhamb refugees on priority.
